Singapore Heritage Festival 2012 Opening at Novena Velocity

This is the 2nd time Singapore Heritage Festival held at Novena Velocity. This time round – Opening ceremony for Singapore Heritage Festival 2012 – Singapore Sporting Spirit.

Last year this was the venue for the closing ceremony -Read my previous post for  Singapore Heritage Festival 2011 Finale @ Novena Square & Velocity @ Novena

Let’s listen to the song – Reach by Gloria Estefan

Sounds familiar to you right? Yes, it was the theme song for 1996 Altanta Olympics in USA.

How about this song – Everyone? This song was written in 2010 especially for inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore as Singapore was the 1st to host Youth Olympics and I felt proud of it.

I even had my 2 adorable buddies from Singapore Youth Olympics Games  – Lyo and Merly too. Aren’t they cute?

lyo and merly

Lyo and Merly

Yes, London Olympics is now on from 27 July to 12 Aug 2012. With the ‘British invasion’ coming onto Television screens with 26 sporting events, don’t you feel excited with a lot of sporting actions for Singapore as well as around the world.

Yes, I wrote down something for Team Singapore. Can you spot my note on the board? Not that nicely written for Go Team Singapore @ London.

What are the interesting facts about Olympics games?

Of course there’s a number of Singapore athletes taking part in this 30th Olympics in London. They are the Singapore paddlers – Feng Tian Wei, Wang Yue Gu and Li Jiawei, Yang Zi, Gao Ning and Zhan Jian, Gary Yeo, Dipna Lim Prasad, gymnast Lim Heem Wei, female weightlifter Helena Wong, swimmers – Tao Li, Joseph Schooling, Quah Zhengwen (Quah Tingwen’s brother), Lynette Lim and Myelene Ong, shooter – Jasmine Ser, sailors – Elizabeth Yin and Colin Cheng, shuttlers – Derek Wong, Gu Juan, Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia and canoeist Geraldine Lee.

Of course, it’s Singapore’s Dream to win at least a medal from Olympics games. Singapore has won a silver medal in 1960 Rome Olympics games by our weightlifter – Mr Tan Howe Liang.

It was not easy as he had to fork out his money to represent Singapore to take part in this event for Weightlifting.

For the last 2008 Olympics in Beijing, our 3 Singapore Paddlers – Li Jiawei, Feng Tian Wei and Wang Yue Gu had won a silver medal for Table Tennis Women’s team event.

However, Singapore was almost close to getting a bronze medal from the previous 2 Olympics games in Greece and Beijing for Jing Junhong and Li Jiawei then.

Of course, it is interesting to find out that Table Tennis was known as Wiff Waff and it’s a game that is originated from England! Shocking isn’t it? As the Chinese has somehow dominated in Table Tennis game.

Well people could try out table tennis during Singapore Heritage Festival 2012 at Novena Velocity.

Of course the table tennis paddlers did not disappoint Singapore in getting Olympic medals. In fact, they won 2 bronze medals from the Women’s team event as well as individual event by our rising table tennis star – Feng Tian Wei.

Feng Tian Wei, Wang Yue Gu and Li Jiawei all had did Singapore proud. Good job and continue the good work that you all have put in to get an Olympic medal/(s). It was a tough fight for all 3 of you then.

Of course, not just focus on the table tennis stars. This heritage festival also showcased our past athletes, besides the rising stars in the sporting scene.

Athletics – C. Kunalan

C Kunalan

He was 1 of the sprinters in Singapore. I saw him at my school 5 years ago during a sports symposium event.

Sailing – Dr Benedict Tan, who is currently a sports medicine doctor working in Changi General Hospital

Badminton – Wong Peng Soon

Bowling – Adelene Wee

Shooting – Fred de Souza

He’s a lawyer by profession. It was not easily to cope with our busy careers while pursuing sports at a professional level to win medals for the nation.

Soccer – Fandi Ahmad

Fandi Ahmad’s 1 of the Singapore best soccer players and he helped Singapore to win Malaysian cup.

Swimming – Patricia Chan

She used to hold the record of winning the most number of gold medals won during SEA games till Joscelyn Yeo had taken over her record. I also did not know that she even took part in talent time too.

Swimming – Neo Chwee Kok

Swimming – Ang Peng Siang

He’s Singapore’s fastest swimmer and I know he teaches at his own swimming school located opposite Kandang Kerbau Women’s and Children Hospital (KKWCH or KKH) which is a few bus stop distance away from Novena MRT station.

Table Tennis – Jing Jun Hong

She’s an assistant coach for Team Singapore Table Tennis team.

Water Polo Boys

Water polo – Singapore has a winning streak for Gold medals for water polo in SEA games. I heard there’s a very interesting story related to the formation of Water Polo team in Singapore. Stay tune to my blogpost related to Water Polo – Coming soon!

People also can play sports games during Singapore Heritage Festival at Novena Velocity. Isn’t it cool? Haha.

While London Olympics is coming to an end, we still can support our para-olympians for the upcoming Para-Olympics!

Please support them for the upcoming Para-Olympics games. Yip Pin Xiu had did well for the last Para-Olympics games in Beijing by winning a gold medal.

They are doing the best for their sporting spirit. To me, every participant in Olympics and Para-Olympics are indeed winners despite of whether they win any medals. It is a very good experience.

Lim Chong Wei (image from Wikipedia)

Lim Chong Wei, a Malaysian shuttler, did his very best for badminton matches to win a medal (silver) despite of his injuries.

How about this special guy – Oscar Pistorius?

Oscar Pistorius (picture from Wikipedia)

He has no feet to run, however, he has to use more energy to run with his lower limb prostheses. He took part in Para-Olympics games in 2008 and now he’s a participant in 2012 London Olympics games representing South Africa and it’s indeed a dream that came true for him to take part in Olympics Games in 2012.

I know about him while I was studying prosthetics and it was quite interested to know that wearing prostheses can be very hot and uses more energy to do the usual walking and running activities compared to normal able bodies.

I think with his determination, he will be able to inspire more people as well as not to give up despite of winning or losing. Just to their personal best & do the nation proud. Well done to all the Olympians!

I think as a Singaporean, we should be proud of Singapore Sporting Heritage as well as other Singaporeans who are helping to create a new part of Singapore Sporting History for everyone to remember. Good job, guys!

華麗的挑戰 Skip Beat Taiwan Drama Heading Song

華麗的獨秀S.O.L.O Sung by Super Junior M. Nice right? Hope you all will enjoy the song. The opening video is quite funny. haha.

Korean Drama: Brilliant Legacy 燦爛的遺產 ( 찬란한 유산 – Chanranhan Yusan)

Brilliant Legacy (燦爛的遺產 Can Lan de Yi Chan, 찬란한 유산 Chanranhan Yusan) also known as Shining Inheritance, is one of my favourite Korean dramas that I have even seen (The other Korean drama that I like is  New Heart).

Brilliant Legacy stars with Han Hyo Joo 韓孝珠 as Go Eun Sung 高恩星, Lee Seung Gi 李昇基 as Sun-Woo Hwan 鮮于煥, Bae Soo Bin 裴秀彬 as Park Jun Se 朴駿世 and Moon Chae Won 文彩元 as Yoo Seung Mi 柳承美 – the 4 main leads of the drama.

The plot of the story focuses on how the will has changed the reaction of the Sun-Woo family and the bonding between Sun-Woo Hwan’s grandmother, Jang Suk Ja together with Go Eun Sung and Sun-Woo Hwan, Go Eun Sung’s brother with Sun-Woo Hwan as well as interesting moments that will make people laugh such as Sun-Woo Hwan’s mother, Oh Young Ran, was teasing the butler of the Sun-Woo family over the butler’s love matters.

Of course, I love the chemistry between Grandma and Hwan, Grandma and Eun Sung, as well as Hwan with Eun Sung and Eun Woo (Eun Sung’s younger brother). Good chemistry makes this drama a good success.

Singapore’s Channel U has just ended its run today and I missed a few of the episodes. Hope to watch the whole drama series again when I am free. Do catch it if you are interested to watch it! =)

Heard this drama has quite high ratings in Korea and won quite a number of awards and best couple award as well including 1 from Shanghai.

Of course, I hope to see more and more interesting and good Korean Dramas in the future. Gamsahamnida감사합니다 for the good work.

Singapore’s Formula 1 from 23-25 Sept 2011

F1 (Formula 1) is coming back to Singapore again for the 4th time! Are you thrill for the fast-packed thrilling action at the Singapore Marina Bay area over this weekend with Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Nico Rosberg or other drivers? Or great entertainment from Linkin Park, Shakira, Charice, Nathan Hartono and other stars from other countries such as Korea, Canada, UK, USA? If you still want to catch the action or buy tickets (only limited tickets left), visit for more details!

If you are keen to buy Formula 1 merchandise, you can buy from the Singapore F1 zone areas or SingPost office too.

For me, I will just stay at home to watch TV and catch the action as I have to do other things to do.

Why are reality TV shows so popular?

Why are reality TV shows so popular? What reality TV shows do  you watch? I know US do produce quite a lot of reality shows and I do watch some of the US reality shows in Singapore. Such as Survivor, The Amazing Race, American Idol and The Apprentice.

I tend to watch Survivor and The Amazing Race more than other shows and found out that people tend to join those show because of US$1 million prize (and the cash prize will be taxed). Some people just want to get the feel of the experience of playing the game or race around the world while some wants the attractive prize money. Some people wants to show their talents.

For people who watched reality TV show, because the show is so real and shows the real side of human. Some just want to enjoy watching talents performing on the show. The amazing race is traveling around the world. So people just want to either support the team they like or see the beautiful scenery.

Some people just want to get some fame on TV. Thus quite a lot of people joined reality TV shows are so popular.

That’s why reality TV shows are so popular.

Reflections of 2010

Reflection of 2010, here I come. These are part of what I think about 2010. I may not mention all the things here as it may be too long-winded.

Starting from Lady Gaga fever to Justin Bieber, sports to other social issues … Some months may not have much happenings as I may be busy with my own personal things and unaware of certain things and I maybe more focus on sports events and music for my reflection.

Lady Gaga
From outrageous outfits such as hair hat to meat dress. What else can she come out with next? I really cannot think anything else. I did not expect that she can use meat and wear it as a dress. No pants. Heavy make-up and creative hairdos. That’s Lady Gaga, dressing in her personal unique style as you can see from one of her MTV that was filmed in Jan 2010 – Telephone.

Justin Bieber
Teen star is getting more and more popular, after his “Baby” hit. But I like his “Never say never” and his collaboration with Sean Kingston’s Eenie Meenie. He’ s16. Such a young star with many fans. Oh… I also listened to “you smile, I smile” too. So let’s smile and be brave.

Sentosa RWS opening on 14 Feb 2010
I do not gamble. But I visit Sentosa the day after for the RWS opening. I went for CNY event at around Imbiah area then. I never visit the interior of this place as the levy is imposed for my entry. Entry: expensive for me.

Tiger Woods and Jack Neo Scandal
I won’t want to talk much on that issue. It is very unhealthy. Hope people will have healthy thoughts. Couples should spend more time communicating with each other to continue to have a healthy relationship and a happy family. If not, children will suffer the most, not the couple.

Marina Sands opening on 27 Apr 2010
I went into Sands and walk past a few times but I am just to see the shops there and collect some thing from 1place. But I do not gamble. I do not know when I intend to visit the garden on the top of the building. It is known to be a posh place.

Rise of Korean Pop/Korean Culture
It seems like more and more Korean stars and bands are coming to Singapore to perform. Such as Lee Min Ho (I still remembered he loves Chilli crabs) who came last year, he did came this year as well as LG ambassador, other stars like Kim Hyun Joong (for The Face Shop), Jae Geun Suk, Soong Jun Ki (Tony Moly) and bands such as JYJ, 2am, Jay Park, 2NE1, GNA and etc.

More Korean beauty brands came to Singapore such as Tony Moly. Not just beauty shops, there are some Korean shops (selling food and drink items) and Korean restaurants near my house. Even some community centres do conduct basic Korean lessons. More shops are selling more Korean singer’s songs as well as drama DVD.

Some of the Korean products are great. Bought some Korean masks and products and tried them out for my maintenance.

Korean words are so difficult to learn. I admire Chen Li Yi, the ex-933 DJ who can speak Korean very well. I only know my Korean pronunciation of my surname is Heo. Korean  is not like Japanese with similar with the pronunciation in Chinese when people see the kanji.

Maybe I should learn more Korean words. Not just Ahnyeong-Haseyo or Gamsahamida. or Shagua or other words that I know.

World Cup 2010 at South Africa

Glad that Spain won the World Cup. There is a spanish version of the Waka Waka (Time for Africa) Song from Shakira. I listened to both version and they sounded great. Missed Paul the octopus as I heard he passed away a few months after 2010 World Cup ends.

Light balls? High altitude? Noises from the vulu? “BooooP” How to control such lighter balls as it went all haywires for certain nations (with Cries). I would like to dedicate miss A’s song “Breathe” as “… I can’t breathe” well, because of most of the stadiums are built on high altitude regions. It is too noisy that people just cannot concentrate. BooooP……….. (Better wear earplugs)

Big Walk 2010
Not sure how long they will intend to organise it again. The registration fees is slightly more expensive compared to the rest of the Big Walks. This was my 5th time joining big walk if I am not wrong.

Great walk, great contest for people to sms while walking, great scenery as people walked past the pit building, the helix bridge and the Sands. Although the goodies in the bag are lesser than the precious years. I joined it partly because of the free Singapore Flyer ticket but I do not get to use the ticket for myself as I gave it to my mother since she wants to visit the Flyer.

Got free copy of the New Paper after finishing walking. The carnival’s okay as it is near the NTUC building at One Marina Boulevard, new area for certain events. It is called Central Promotory. But long walking distance from the bus stop.

One Community Walk in Singapore

It is where the whole community walks together on the same day at different places on 25 July 2010. Around 75 starting points in Singapore and the one in Khatib was one of the largest number of participants taking part in.

I took part in that and luckily the starting and ending points were within walking distances. Some of the finishing points had a bigger celebration as it is to commemorate Singapore 2010.

YOG 2010
Theme Song of 1st Youth Olympics games

This is the 1st time Singapore hosting such a big sporting event. From preparation, to torch relays, opening ceremony, sports competitions and closing cermony. It is hard to say goodbye. I love those 2 loveable mascots, Lyo and Merly. Although there are some hipcups, but it was still a great experience for Singapore

lyo and merly

Lyo and Merly

The torch relays was such a grand event as it was spread over the national day week. 6 days in different parts of Singapore. Of course, I went and witness the 2nd day of the torch relay near my house. The atmosphere was so great. With the vulu, flags, fans, clappers and other items. It was so hot under the sun but a rare opportunity for me to witness the torch as I do not know when YOG will come back to Singapore again. Each day of relay ended off with a celebration. I went for the celebration at Singapore Polytechnic and Marina Bay then. So I just blended myself into the atmosphere there.

Celebrations at Marina Bay

Celebrations at Marina Bay

Overbudget? I won’t comment of this as Singapore rarely host big events and this is the inaugural Youth Olympics Games (more budget as this is the 1st YOG in the world).

Thus this is the spirit of the Youth olympic games. It is not about the cost of the games but to spread the culture and share the special moments.

Haze in Singapore
– Cough, Cough. Hope people will think more about the environment. Do not just simply burn those trees and turn them into ashes while polluting the environment, not just 1place but many many places. There are many other alternatives to solve certain issues yet be more environmental friendly.

Singapore Singtel Formula 1 2010
Roads are blocked for Formula 1 for a few days for the preparations of F1 race in Singapore. Great concert by Chris Daughtery, Adam Lambert and plus-size Mariah Carey (glad that she’s pregnant as she’s not young and older expectant mothers have a higher risk in giving birth). You can google to look for Mariah’s images or

How about the crashes? Whose is the most memorable. Of course, it is Not the Lewis Hamilton, but his ex-McLaren’s partner, Heikki. I think the part where one of the cars with fires fuming towards the 2nd last lap was the highlight of the Singapore Formula 1 race after the crash. Glad that Heikki felt the heat and asked for fire extinguisher. This moment was voted as one of the best highlights on the F1 2010 season.

India Commonwealth Games with faults and its athletes village
Heard there are quite a lot of complaints over its preparation. I will not comment much on that. But I am glad that Singapore won quite a lot of medals for shooting and table tennis. As well as seeing many different sports events in India.

Selina from S.H.E got badly burnt
My heart aches from her as she suffered from 3rd degree burns. She may not look like the same as before but glad that she is recovering well. Hope she will get better soon.

Parangs and gang fights in Singapore
I would say it is not safe at this rate and why use violence as a resort and harm other people. Especially for family friendly places such as Downtown East. I hope people will not want to use violence to solve some problems. What is the use of doing such things? Think about the others. Money and hospital expenses, injuries and etc. Hospital expenses are not cheap. Someone died because of the fight. Please cherish people’s life.

Guangzhou Asian Games 2010
Opening Ceremony was great and spectacular. People can walk on the screen (the screen was hung vertically) and create beautiful moves and patterns. WOW!

Although Singapore did not win that much medals, I would say Good job to Singapore. Glad that Tao Li still can get gold medal for her favorite event. I always get more of the sport updates from my mobile phone even if I am working and do not have the time to watch TV.

I missed the feeling of watching such sports events on TV after Asian games had ended.

Christmas Times at Orchard and other places
What do you think about the Christmas Lightings? I saw those lightings near the Suntec area while I was walking from the bus stop to Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon Venue. It was great. Took some photos of that but all were gone as the SD card’s corrupted. It looked beautiful.

I did not explore much of the trees at Orchard area. Only took a bus past the area and see some of the trees. Plaza Singapura’s ok. Paragon’s gold in colour. 1 of the trees is sponsored by Visa. But all the trees will be gone from 3 jan 2010 onwards. So come and snap those photos of the trees if you want to capture them.

Parkway has Toy Story Christmas tree and I loved it. As I love toys and animations. It made me missed Toy Story even more. But the tree was removed before I had the chance to go there and take the tree picture.

I love the Christmas Tree at Downtown East. It is filled of small Carebears toys as its ornaments. So cute.

Christmas sales are okay. Went and bought some stuff that were on sale. Glad to have post-christmas sales as well. Some savings for me.

Countdown in 2010/2011 at Vivocity and Marina Bay Area
I most probably will stay at home to watch channel 8 countdown on 31 dec 2010 and watch the repeated telecast of Channel 5 marina bay countdown the next day if I have the time for the interesting performances by the artistes.

So it is coming to the end of this year? So what are you going to do? I most probably going to sing “Carebears countdown, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! “

Happy New Year 2011!!!!! Enjoy.
